From I-40, take exit #125, Lenoir-Rhyne Blvd., and go north. Staying in the left lane, turn left towards downtown on Tate Blvd., then right (north) on Highway 127 (the first stoplight). Then follow the directions below.
From Highway 127, heading north, turn right on 4th Avenue NE by the library and go one block. The church is to the right.
From Highway 321 going north, turn right at 2nd Avenue NW (at the McDonalds) and follow it through town to the blinking light at 3rd Street NE. Turn left and go one block.
The counseling office is reached by following the walkway along the right side of the sanctuary (between the sanctuary and the house next door) to the double white doors.Close
Dr. Golden is a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), as well as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) through the National Board of Certified Counselors. He is a member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Licensed Professional Counselor Association of North Carolina (LPCANC), and Chi Sigma Iota (Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society). He is also an ordained elder in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Dr. Golden has an MS and Ph.D. in pastoral counseling from Loyola College in Maryland (Baltimore), an MA in Culture and Spirituality from Holy Names College in Oakland, CA, and an MDiv from Duke Divinity School. He completed his undergraduate work at Duke University, graduating with honors. His doctoral dissertation was on "Spirituality as a Predictor of Burnout Among UM Clergy," and was published in the Journal of Psychology and Theology in 2004. Clinical training experience includes work at Hospice of the Chesapeake Bereavement Center (Millersville, MD), the College of Notre Dame Counseling Center (Baltimore, MD), and Towson University Counseling Center (Towson, MD). Dr. Golden has been with Sanctuary Counseling Group since 2002.
Dr. Golden specializes in mood disorders (depression, dysthymic disorder); anxiety disorders (acute stress, generalized anxiety, panic disorders, social anxiety, specific phobias, post-traumatic stress); stress management and burnout; bereavement and complicated grief; life transition and adjustment disorders; issues related to self-esteem and guilt; issues related to personal/spiritual growth. Dr. Golden also uses a good bit of mindfulness training and meditative work in his therapy, as needed or helpful.
Dr. Golden also specializes in issues unique to clergy self-care and healthy functioning. He also contracts with Ministry Development Services in the psychological assessment of clergy candidates for the Western North Carolina Conference and the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church.
