October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
By Sandra Kahn, M.A., LCMHC
October 2024 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Sanctuary joins the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF") inviting you to notice the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, as well as take actions to help increase early detection and prevention of breast cancer.
Statistics can be staggering, and at times hopeful. NBCF notes:
- 1 in 8 women in the US will develop breast cancer in her lifetime
- This year, an estimated 2,800 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer
- There are over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the US
- 66% of breast cancer cases are detected at an early localized stage, allowing more ease of treatment.

NBCF reminds us that disparities in breast cancer prevention and care exist for many due to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. These same disparities at times prevent mental health care as well. Sanctuary reaches to help reduce these disparities in mental health care by providing services that are affordable, accessible, and attainable.
Here at Sanctuary we welcome the opportunity to come alongside those facing the challenges of health concerns including cancer, its treatment and survival, as well as caregivers of patients and those who grieve the loss of loved ones
Early in treatment we work to provide resources to reduce stress and its impact on the body. A few grounding techniques that may assist you wherever you are on your journey are noted below (source https://www.therapistaid.com/therapy-worksheet/grounding-techniques):
