A Statement from SCG regarding Recent Events in America
At Sanctuary Counseling Group we are called to minister to everyone in all walks of life. As mental health therapists we take great care in refraining from imposing our own personal values within our practice; and yet, we also have a responsibility to advocate for change when witnessing the oppression of others. Moreover, when we put this in practice it is our belief that we are following our mission to love all of God’s people. Sanctuary Counseling Group strives to be agents of healing in all the communities we serve, which in this moment begins with boldly making a declarative statement of our values. Recent news stories around blatant and insidious racism, as well as specific incidents of brutality and killing of black and brown citizens across our nation have not gone unnoticed by our staff. Each time these incidents occur the accumulating effects of this type of violence can be traumatizing.
Subsequently, we believe that it is imperative that we let our clients and our communities know we do not condone behavior that mistreats a class of people based on race, sexuality, socio-economics, gender, or any other aspect of a person’s identity. We implore our colleagues in the mental health professions to stand with us, blend their voices with ours in condemning these and similar actions. For those who are feeling the pain of the recent rash of events, we want to be present and walk with you in your brokenness towards recovery. We want to offer you A Path to Sanctuary.
