How Does Domestic Violence Impact the LGBTQIA+ Community?

Katherine Sherrill, M.A., LCMHCA, MT-BC

Domestic Violence or Intimate Partner Violence exists in all communities. It has been a growing concern in LGBTQIA+ communities as our support networks often foster gendered violence. In a 2017 study done by NCAVP, it was found that nearly half (43%) of IPV survivors who sought shelter reported being denied access. Of that 43%, one third of them were denied access due to their gender identity. We must continue to support programming that cares for all victims. By limiting choices and places of safety it only increases the likelihood of continued violence. The LGBTQIA+ community like many others experience IPV not only at home but at the workplace, in public, on campus, and at shelters. Join us in bringing awareness to Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence across all our communities. Learn more about the NCAVP and their continued work with the LGBTQIA+ community at VAWnet.org.
